"In Bangladesh, I didn’t feel safe because of the harassment and violence against women, so I moved to Italy for ten years. While there, I stayed in a women’s shelter. I didn’t know where my next meal would come from, and the uncertainty was overwhelming. I had no support system, and I felt isolated, disconnected from a world that seemed so far away.

“When I finally arrived in Canada, it was a huge relief, but the adjustments were tough. The language barrier made everything harder. I had trouble navigating the healthcare system, understanding the social services available, and finding my way around a city I didn’t know. Everything felt foreign, and I was overwhelmed with the responsibilities of settling into this new life while caring for my children.

“I first heard about The Neighbourhood Group (TNG) and their perinatal services from a social worker who noticed I was struggling. That’s when my journey began. I was skeptical at first. I had never experienced anything like this before but decided to give it a try.

“TNG made all the difference in my life. Staff were incredibly welcoming, understanding, and patient. They helped me navigate the healthcare system, teaching me about nutrition, mental health, and what to expect during my pregnancy and after my baby was born. They also provided me with peer support groups, where I met other women who were facing similar challenges. It was comforting to know that I wasn’t alone in this journey. I even received baby clothes, blankets and diapers from wonderful donors to give me a good start.

“But the most impactful part for me was the Peer Leader Training. It gave me the tools and confidence to not only take control of my own life but also to give back to others in my community. I learned how to listen, offer support, and share the knowledge I gained. Becoming a peer leader has allowed me to help other women who are going through what I went through, and it’s been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

“Today, I’m thriving. I’m more confident in navigating life in Canada, I’ve built a strong support network, and I’m proud of the woman I’ve become. I’m honoured to be a peer leader, and I continue to grow and learn through this role. My life is no longer defined by the struggles of the past. Thanks to TNG and the Perinatal services team, I feel empowered and ready to support others in their journeys, just as I was.”
