Wendy’s passion for painting encouraged her to volunteer at our Active Seniors’ Program

Loneliness. Cognitive impairment. Physical weakness. These are just a few of the issues plaguing isolated seniors. Through our Active Seniors’ Program (ASP), we provide daytime programs that support older adults in maintaining their independence while living at home. Wendy first experienced our ASP when she brought her mother-in-law to the program.

“I saw how everyone was warmly welcomed when they arrived and appreciated the lively and supportive atmosphere. It didn’t take long for me to see why the program meant so much to the people coming there.

“When staff learned about my background in painting, they asked if I could help with Mid-Autumn Festival decorations. I hadn’t been painting recently so was happy to contribute and painted ‘Chang’e Flying to the Moon’. It was really enjoyable and I offered to volunteer to teach Chinese painting classes for seniors at the program.”

“Through teaching, I rediscovered my passion for art, and I could see the seniors gaining confidence when they expressed themselves through their artwork. Even when my mother-in-law was in the hospital, I still made time to teach. The enthusiasm of the seniors in the class encouraged me even more. And the staff were very understanding, showing great care and support to everyone, including myself. That meant a lot to me and really strengthened my connection with this community.”
