Opportunity for All

Opportunity. Look at the dictionary definition and you will see something along the lines of “having the chance to improve”. This is very true. But at The Neighbourhood Group Community Services, we see it as so much more.

Everything we do – our strategic planning, implementation of services, and advocacy - centres around that core principle – giving opportunities for people to improve their lives, how and when they need.

It is about new initiatives for keeping people housed, like our partnership with the Parkdale Neighbourhood Land Trust to preserve affordable housing, and our new TC Best program that helps people in shelters maintain their residence.

It is about supporting youth by expanding our Game Changers mediation and Youth Awoken programs in Scarborough, partnering with the United Way Greater Toronto on our 10,000 Youth Summer Jobs campaign, and launching our new book written by youth for youth, Let Me Be Honest.

It is about helping newcomers adjusts safely and securely to life in Canada, despite funding cuts from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, and our Refugees and Immigrants Welcome Here campaign.

It is about helping people in need – children, teens, seniors, people who are homeless or unemployed, and those on the margins – anyone who is struggling with the weight of the issues they face. It is for them that we provide opportunities to meet those needs.

This Report shines a light on some of those issues, and the opportunities we provided within the past year.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, we want to express our sincere appreciation for our incredible and dedicated staff, volunteers and peer leaders, our generous donors and funders, and all our neighbours. Together, we provide opportunity for all.

In 2025-2026, The Neighbourhood Group Community Services’ in-person and online programs helped improve the lives of 76,258 vulnerable people in priority Toronto neighbourhoods.

Volunteer Spotlight

Thank you to our dedicated volunteers!

Last year, 788 dedicated volunteers delivered more than 90,000 hours of essential support to our community! Whether it’s helping at our Corner Drop-in or delivering Meals on Wheels, giving time as a Board member, acting as a community mediator, doing community outreach, helping at income tax clinics, tutoring, or mentoring, our volunteers make a huge difference in the lives of vulnerable people in Toronto.

“At the clinics, I help people, some of whom are navigating income tax returns for the first time. Other people may struggle with language barriers, or the increasing change to online returns instead of paper ones. For them, getting benefits for which they are already entitled, like the GST/HST credit or the Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB), can be the difference between having a full month of groceries or making rent. One fellow there is 102. He and his daughter, who’s in her eighties, come every year to ensure they get their taxes filed. They are so appreciative and an absolute delight! By helping, I can give him and his family a little more to live on each month.”

A special thank you to Jennifer Hartviksen, Josh Kleiman and Michael Stuart who are leaving the Board of Directors this year and were integral to successfully integrating merged organizations and boards. :

Jennifer’s contributions were instrumental to the overall structure and health of TNGCS, starting in 2019 when she joined the Board. Since then, she has served as Board Chair, as well as the Chair of the Governance Committee from 2023 to 2025, and was an integral part of the Finance, HR and Quality Committees. Josh also joined the Board in 2019, first serving on the Quality and Governance Committees. In 2023, he became the Board Vice-Chair until 2025. Together, Jennifer and Josh helped guide TNG through the merger with St. Stephen’s, as well as the difficulties stemming from the pandemic. Similarly, Michael’s influence has been keenly felt on the Neighbourhood Link Homes Board since 2021, and the TNG Board, where he continues to integrate and streamline both Boards.
